Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Urban migration is a global phenomenon characterized by the movement of people from rural areas to cities in search of better economic opportunities, education, and social amenities. In Nigeria, this trend has led to various socio-economic challenges, including overcrowding, unemployment, and inadequate infrastructure. Tudun Wada Local Government Area, Kano State, is no exception to these challenges, as urban migration has significantly shaped its socio-economic dynamics. Films, as a potent medium of communication, have been used to reflect and address pressing societal issues, including the complexities of urban migration (Abdullahi & Yusuf, 2023). Nollywood and Kannywood filmmakers have increasingly explored urban migration themes, portraying the struggles and realities of individuals affected by this phenomenon (Aliyu, 2024). Such films not only entertain but also educate audiences, raising awareness of the challenges associated with urban migration and fostering discourse on potential solutions.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Urban migration has introduced significant socio-economic challenges in Tudun Wada, including a rise in informal settlements, pressure on public services, and increased unemployment. While films have the potential to spotlight these issues and propose solutions, their role in addressing urban migration challenges in Tudun Wada remains underexplored. The absence of research on the effectiveness of films in fostering awareness and discourse around urban migration challenges necessitates this study (Muhammad, 2023).

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine how films depict the challenges of urban migration in Tudun Wada.
  2. To evaluate the impact of these films on public awareness and understanding of urban migration.
  3. To identify the limitations of films as a medium for addressing urban migration challenges.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How do films portray the challenges of urban migration in Tudun Wada?
  2. What is the impact of these films on the audience’s awareness of urban migration issues?
  3. What challenges do filmmakers face in addressing urban migration through films?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Films significantly influence public understanding of urban migration challenges in Tudun Wada.
  2. Urban migration-themed films foster dialogue on possible solutions to migration issues.
  3. Accessibility to such films determines their effectiveness in addressing migration challenges.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study highlights the importance of films as a tool for social change, particularly in addressing urban migration challenges. The findings will benefit filmmakers, policymakers, and urban planners in leveraging media to drive awareness and solutions to urban migration issues.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the role of films in highlighting urban migration challenges in Tudun Wada Local Government Area, Kano State.
